The beautiful medium of watercolor has been confined to a paper-behind-glass niche for too long. Now, with this exciting new ground, anything you've dreamed of painting with watercolor can become a reality. Daniel Smith watercolor ground is much better than gesso's and matte medium at handling lots of water and protects your paper from getting damaged from the water. It allows watercolors to be used in traditional ways to take advantage of their transparency and granulation, blending and flowing qualities which make watercolors special. This watercolor ground is easy to use - just brush it on - and incredibly versatile.

Daniel Smith watercolor ground allows the text of your journals to show through, while you apply your watercolor artwork on top. Absorbent or semi-absorbent surfaces (such as paper, canvas, other fabrics, wood, plaster, shells and hardboard) require no special prep before brushing on the ground. You can apply it straight from the container using a soft-haired synthetic brush for a smooth finish, or a hog bristle brush for a more textured finish. One coat will cover most surfaces.

To allow the watercolor ground to attain the correct degree of absorption, let it dry and cure for at least 24 hours. Because it creates a surface more absorbent than paper, Daniel Smith works best in conjunction with lower-water paints, such as watercolors and thinned acrylics.
